There to be There.

Published August 26, 2009
Spiritual practice and police work may seem an unlikely pairing, but for more than 50 volunteers with Sonoma County's Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service (LECS), the combination is a way of life.
"I wanted to contribute in a way that included spiritual practice as a focus and center," explains Teresa Franklin, a registered nurse and graduate of last year's LECS academy. "One thing that surprised me is how closely I identified with the chaplaincy community, and also the work of law enforcement. I felt a kinship—like it was not a stretch to understand the personality type and loyalty toward serving the community that goes into those professions."
The interfaith, nondenominational agency, which begins its 11th training academy Sept. 23, describes its mission as one that provides solace and "emotional support" to law enforcement personnel and the community alike.

Published on June 4, 2006
A baby dies in its sleep. A traffic light clicks from red to green, and a car crash claims multiple lives.
When tragedy strikes, a network of professionals comes together to support families dealing with life's most difficult events.
For Santa Rosan Margie Anderson, who volunteers with the Sonoma County Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Program, standing shoulder to shoulder with the police officer on someone's front porch is part of the job.

SOUL OF AN OPTIMIST

HAVING SPENT MUCH OF HER LIFE HELPING OTHERS, BECOMING A POLICE CHAPLAIN MADE PERFECT SENSE FOR PAMELA MOORE
Published on September 12, 2004
Pamela Moore holds fast to an Anne Frank belief that people are good at heart, even while focusing most of her career on the sad, dark aspects of life.
She's spent years battling discrimination and hate crimes and worked with troubled youth and the homeless. Now, at 53, Moore has signed up to become a law enforcement chaplain.
Like others in the all-volunteer Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Program, she accompanies a police officer to the homes of crime or accident victims.
"It's very moving to be with people when they find out their loved one is not coming home anymore," Moore said.

CHAPLAINS ANSWER CRISIS CALL

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Published on September 15, 2003
The Rev. Dave Powell, who runs the county's law enforcement chaplaincy program, is always looking for others with big hearts to help people in times of crisis.
The volunteer job is tough -- comforting the families and friends of homicide and suicide victims, and people killed in car crashes, by SIDS or in other tragic circumstances.
"We're called when something makes the front pages," Powell, 68, said. "When people's lives have been utterly shattered."
This week, about 15 recruits will begin a six-month training course for the program. The training mostly consists of learning police culture, so the chaplains can work alongside officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel.

POLICE CHAPLAINS BRING COMPASSION

Published on March 24, 2002
Tom Jackson, an ordained minister, never expected to use a gun in his line of work.
But the 53-year-old Santa Rosan learned how to hold a pistol Monday. And by the end of the day, he had shot simulated kidnappers and bank robbers -- in the Fire Arms Training Simulator at the Police Department
As part of his training for the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy Service, Jackson was required to step into the simulator and defend himself against armed bandits displayed on a life-size screen.
"It gives them a sense of the split-second decisions officers go through," said Rod Bowman, head of the chaplaincy academy and a Pastor at First Christian Church in Santa Rosa.
